Summer 2017 Newsletter

It has been another very busy year to date for Mayo Association Dublin. Following the election of new Officers and Executive Committee at our AGM on 24 April, a number of exciting events will be taking place over the coming months, starting with our Annual Summer Party on Thursday 20 July.

New Officers and the Executive Committee were elected at our AGM on Monday 24 April in The Sandymount Hotel. Our new chairperson Julie Doyle (Swinford) succeeded Paul Sammin (Louisburgh), and becomes only the fifth female to hold this position since the Association was founded in 1905!

We sincerely thank our former chair Paul Sammin for his hard work and commitment, which he has selflessly given to Mayo Association Dublin for the last number of years, as he steps down from the Executive Committee.

Retaining their officers’ posts: Treasurer: Michael Kealy (Newport), PRO: Bernardine McBride Walsh (Westport); President: Mona McGarry (Ballyhaunis); Vice President: Eddie Melvin (Ballina); while Grace Heneghan (Ballinrobe) was newly-elected as Honorary Secretary with a new position created for Vice-Secretary to which Orla Fitzpatrick was subsequently appointed. Meanwhile, Frank Fleming retains his position as Honorary Life President.

The following Executive Committee members were appointed: David Rafter, Keith Guthrie, Paddy Moran, Rosanna Loftus, Helena Kelly, Diarmuid McLoughlin, Maeve McLoughlin, Teresa Ruddy, Fr. Gerry French, Derek Reilly and Orla Crowe.

The following members were co-opted to the Executive Committee at our subsequent committee meetings: Noel Howley, Jim Murphy, Sean Lyons, John Costello, Adrian Langan, Laura Daly, Adrian Neary and Mairead Fleming.

Annual Summer Party: Our annual Summer Party will take place on Thursday 20 July in a new city centre venue – Lemon & Duke – located on Royal Hibernian Way (just off Grafton Street).

This trendy bar is owned by Irish Rugby stars Jamie Heaslip, Sean O’Brien, Rob and Dave Kearney.

Mayo Golf Society Classic: We’re sponsoring a Golf Classic hosted by Mayo Golf Society on Thursday 27 July at St Margaret’s Golf & Country Club.

Business Lunch - intercontinental hotelBusiness Lunch: This year is a special one as we celebrate the 21st anniversary of our Business Lunch, which takes place on Friday 10 November in the Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge.

Further information will follow in due course.


Gaeltacht Scholarships: We are providing scholarships to two Junior Certificate cycle students from St John’s College, Ballyfermot to attend Colaiste Uisce in Belmullet, Co. Mayo. This represents a fantastic opportunity for these students to attend an Irish college in circumstances where they may not have an opportunity to do so.

Website revampWebsite Revamp: We are revamping our website, so keep an eye out for updates and please bear with us during ‘reconstruction’ phase.

In the meantime we will continue to send updates by emails and through FacebookTwitter and Instagram.


Irish Coast Guard 1Charitable Donations: In addition to our Gaeltacht Scholarships, we have been delighted to assist in giving charitable donations to the ‘R116’ rescue team effort, RPM Ireland, Clann Beo, Ballina Boxing Club, Swinford Boxing Club and Western Care Association.

We always try to respond positively to requests for donations, which we receive each year. However, this year we will be publicly seeking submissions from Mayo-based charities to partner with Mayo Association Dublin in order that one charity can benefit from each of our major headline events.

Sponsorship: A lot of new events, scheduled to take place in the autumn, are currently in the planning stage and we will reveal them to you in due course. In order to deliver high quality events, we need your continued financial support by attending or agreeing to sponsor some of our upcoming headline events.
