MAYO DAY – the day dedicated to the celebration of the culture, vibrant communities, and the unquenchable spirit of County Mayo – returns for its fifth successive year on Saturday 4 May.
The theme of the 2019 Mayo Day is The Mayo Word, which will recognise and celebrate our county’s illustrious number of writers and poets, and it will also reflect on our communities, our creativity and our connection to a pride of place both here in this county and around the globe.
The Mayo Word will be discussed, celebrated and defined through this Mayo Day campaign culminating in a flagship event taking place at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough on Saturday 4 May.

In an interview with The Irish Times for a Special Report on Mayo Day, Martina Hughes, Communications Manager with Mayo County Council, outlined the phenomenal success of the event both at home and abroad, over the last five years.
“Mayo Day is a celebration of ‘Mayo-ness’ in Mayo communities worldwide that has grown from strength to strength over the last five years. Across the May Bank Holiday Weekend, Mayo people at home and away have an opportunity to celebrate all that is great about their progressive, can-do county,” she noted.
The council launched the first Mayo Day event in 2015, and “year on year it has grown to the point that different events around the world take place to mark it,” according to Hughes. And as part of this year’s celebrations, a limited-edition Mayo Day GAA jersey will be worn by Mayo’s footballers for their first-round Championship game against New York in Gaelic Park on Sunday 5 May.
